I have found the following pages helpful in my own work, and hope you may find them helpful, too.
- Web Hosting: DigitalSpace has been a wonderful and inexpensive host for me. It offers a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySql, Php) environment, Plesk control panel, email and much more.
- Free Software: Usually I steer clear of free software (Cyberduck and Audacity are exceptions). However, here is a source for many for the Mac, my preferred system).
- Form Security: If you are serious about putting forms on the web, you’d best plan some security. One element is a captcha, those pictures of letters and numbers you have to type or you cannot submit the form. Here is one that worked for me.
- Color Pickers: There are any number of color pickers on the web and some you can buy. These best two free-to-use ones I’ve found are at webwhirlers and wellstyled.
- Royalty Free Sound Bites: Want music, right? Here are some short snippets free from Kevin MacLeod. You must credit him to use them.
- Images: Many articles in Wikipedia publish public domain pictures. Most images created by American government agencies such as NASA and NOAA are public domain, including some at Visible Earth and Hubble Site. The University of Texas, El Paso has a large collection of public domain portraits. StockXchange has a large collection of images, many of which are offered for virtually unrestricted use.
- What Spiders See: Want to know what search engine spiders see at your site? You should care if you want rankings.
- Web Page Indexing: How many of your pages are indexed in Google? If Google is missing them, you may have a problem with content or with links.
- RSS: If you’ve built an RSS feed, you are going to want to make sure it is valid so it will come through in various browsers. Try this validator.
- Jazzed-up Menus: Selection menus can look pretty boring. Try this script to improve their appearance. I’ve not tried this one, just want to.
- Javascript: I don’t use javascript except as a last resort. Users can turn it off and about 6% routinely do. If your site is based on it and they turn theirs off, you are helpless. Still, it is convenient for some things and I do use it here and there. Here is a javascript tutorial page.
- Publishing: You can publish your own book entirely on the web now at low cost at several places. One of the best is lulu.com; you can "get out the door" for under $10.00 if you want just one copy of a medium size book and no ISBN. With ISBN and full distribution (listings at amazon.com, Barnes and Nobles, etc, you will pay about $124.
- Product Comparisons: Want to find the best buy for your needs? Epinions is an awesome place.
- Web Design Considerations: Web guru Jakob Nielsen weighs in with his studied opinion on what makes a web site usable. The simpler and clearer, the better, he says.
- Domain Names: I get my personal domain names through 000domains; it is inexpensive and reliable.
- Content Protection: If your content is good, unscrupulous web people may put its content into a frame and pass it off as their own. Here is JS code to prevent framing.
- Web Marketing: Ralph Wilson and MarketingSherpa provide basic marketing newsletters for free which I’ve found quite helpful at times. Wilson gives away an excellent free e-book on how to promote your website.
- Tiles: Desktoppublishing is a good source of free tiling page backgrounds.
- Google Rank: Here is a handy page which shows you your Google page rank.
