#5 - Alec Forbes of Howglen, by George MacDonald
Annie has a beautiful character. Alec goes through believable trials. Everyone in this novel struggles at some point against doubt or sin. All become better people, except the shopkeeper, who never ceases his petty lying and cheating.
I discovered this book only a few years ago, but have already read it three times. Nothing major happens in it, but people are real people and grow and gain depth. Of the seven novels I have chosen, this is the most concerned with the inner Christian life, and presents it without mawkishness.
Had MacDonald used less Scottish vernacular, I believe this would be one of the best-known novels of the English language.
